OUR CAMPUSES
East Dallas (est. 1978)
East Dallas Community School is a 33-year-old nonprofit school in East Dallas for children nine and younger, from primarily low-income families. The East Dallas campus was the first campus among the current three campuses.
Lindsley Park (est. 1999)
Lindsley Park Community School is a 12-year-old open-enrollment public charter school in East Dallas that replicates East Dallas Community School’s programs for low-income families with children ages three to nine years old.
Bachman Lake (est. 2009)
At our new Bachman Lake site, we begin with parents during pregnancy and provide parent education for families with infants and toddlers. BLCS provides children with activities that help them grow mentally, socially, emotionally and physically.
Headlines
Bachman Lake reaches full enrollment
EDCS’s newest site—Bachman Lake—is now serving 140 children.
Last October, staff and two parent volunteers went door-to-door in the local apartments inviting families to a fun and informal event held outside our offices.
We gave away new books, gathered enrollment information and provided some food and family-friendly entertainment. Enrolled families receive weekly home visits, parent group meetings, child socialization sessions and story times.
Lindsley Park honored
East Dallas Community Schools’ (EDCS) Lindsley Park campus has been awarded the 2011 Educational Achievement Award from the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA).
“I cannot think of any award that I am more proud of than this one, which recognizes our work in supporting children’s emotional well-being,” said Terry Ford, Executive Director. “Since its founding in 1978, a founding principle of EDCS has been that emotional well-being is the key to providing our students with a foundation for success.”
The award is given to schools that further psychoanalytically-informed work with pre-K-12 educators, schools and their students. EDCS promotes emotional well-being by offering free on-site play-therapy sessions to children dealing with emotional or behavioral problems.
In addition to play-therapy sessions, child psychoanalysts B. James Bennett and Sarah Rabb Bennett provide pro bono consultations with teachers helping their understanding of children dealing with emotional or behavioral problems.
Representatives from EDCS and Lindsley Park accepted the award on January 13, 2011 in New York City.
The Return of Dallas Cityscape
EDCS is excited to announce the return of our end-of-summer event! Last year the Dallas skyline was transformed into Lego bricks to make one amazing exhibit called Dallas Cityscape. EDCS was the sole beneficiary of the Dallas Cityscape exhibit that raised $80,000 for our schools.
This year’s exhibit will feature out-of-this-world additions like lasers, spaceships, aliens and much more. We invite you and your family to come see the 2011 exhibit at the Museum of Nature & Science located in Fair Park. For more details please visit DallasCityscape.com.

Volunteer Spotlight
Martha Mendoza, an EDCS Service Hero
There are so many volunteers, but few who go above and beyond the general requirements of volunteer service to become a Service Hero. Martha Mendoza is a Service Hero.
Martha volunteers her time to East Dallas Community Schools by tutoring children in three classes, twice a week. She enriches EDCS’ bilingual efforts by working with students for whom English is a second language.
These are the students that are having the hardest time learning English and adjusting to the classrooms. Through Spanish activities and lessons, Martha helps ESL students become more comfortable and confident with themselves, making their transition to English a much smoother process.
A native of Mexico, Martha experienced first-hand the challenges of learning a new language and culture. She volunteers to do this because she knows what it’s like for children who don’t speak English to enter into a system that is predominantly English-speaking.
“Martha is the perfect example of a dedicated parent. Her involvement and loyalty to EDCS make her a hero to me,” says Maria Quiroga, School Director for EDCS. “She is the classic role model for the parents in our community.”
Alumni Corner
Serafina Lopez awarded the 2011 Terry N. Ford Scholarship
Congratulations to Serafina Lopez, who is the recipient of the 2011 Terry N. Ford College Scholarship.
After graduating third grade, Lopez moved on to St. Alcuin Montessori and graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in the top 12 percent with honors.
While at Woodrow Wilson, Lopez was a member of the student council and international club.
Lopez plans to attend Texas State University in San Marcos in the fall of 2011.
