Dear Parents,

The April 14th date for resurrecting a new playground has been cancelled due to manufacturer delays. When we have all the parts necessary to build our new playground, then we will set a new date. Thank you for your patience and eagerness to assist!

Helping Our Kids Grow

Children Learn Best with Appropriate Challenges

Meeting and overcoming challenge is essential for human growth.  Challenges teach us where we are strong and where we are weak.  They stretch our minds and capacities, and they develop our patience, resilience, perseverance, and resourcefulness.

The trick is to recognize an appropriate level of challenge.  Too much and the child is overwhelmed and leaves with a sense of failure.  Too little challenge, and the child does not feel a real sense of accomplishment or growth.   So what is the right amount of challenge?

Because you know your own child you can usually tell what he can and cannot do.  Present him with activities that he will be able to perform without too much difficulty or error.  There should be something in the task that he knows how to do, which he has already mastered.  Then there is something that is new or difficult to accomplish.

You can help your child by first showing him what he already knows; this is a big confidence booster, which gives him more motivation to tackle the difficult part.  Next, you can show him how to do the difficult part in a careful, simple, slow way.  Then allow him to try it himself.
