Mike Birrer

Mike Birrer is a member of the East Dallas Community Schools (EDCS) Board of Directors and is a partner in Carrington Coleman’s employment and litigation sections. His practice focuses primarily on issues related to labor, employment, and employee benefits. In addition to litigation, Mr. Birrer provides training, counseling, and advice regarding workforce matters.

Mr. Birrer has been named by D Magazine as one of the “Best Lawyers in Dallas” for 2012; and from 2004 through 2007, he has been named by Texas Monthly magazine as a “Rising Star” in Texas law.

After graduating from Hendrix College, magna cum laude, in 1989 he went on to Vanderbilt University where he earned a J.D. in 1992.  While at Vanderbilt, Mr. Birrer was Associate Editor of Order of the Coif and a board member of the Vanderbilt Law Review.

He is a member of the Dallas Bar Association, the Dallas Bar Foundation, the Texas Bar Association, the Texas Bar Foundation, and the American Bar Association.

Mr. Birrer has been a member of the EDCS Board of Directors since 2009.

Michael Giles

Michael Giles is a member of the East Dallas Community Schools (EDCS) Board of Directors and is the Managing Principal of the North Texas Regional offices of Right Management Consultants. He offers over 25 years of firsthand experience in career transition and management development, encompassing the not-for-profit sector, Fortune 500 level marketing, and successful entrepreneurial and consulting services.

Mr. Giles’ background includes operational effectiveness design and implementation, teambuilding, management and supervisory development, and culture integration. He has a diverse background in marketing, administration, manufacturing, and distribution, with experience in both product and service sales and delivery.

Mr. Giles holds an M.B.A. in Management from the University of Dallas. His bachelor level studies in Human Sciences were completed at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth and the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana.

Mr. Giles has been a member of the EDCS Board of Directors since 2010.

John H. Fullinwider, President

John H. Fullinwider is president of the East Dallas Community Schools (EDCS) Board of Directors and is a Supervising Librarian at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Executive Director of Common Ground Community Development Corporation, and a board member for Texas Low-Income Housing Information Service and the School for Community Organizing. He also taught in the Dallas Independent School District from 1994-2009.

He co-founded EDCS in 1978 along with Executive Director, Terry Ford, believing that all children can succeed, regardless of race or income.

Mr. Fullinwider earned a B.A. in English and Latin, with high honors, Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Texas at Austin and earned a Masters of Library Science from Texas Woman’s University.

Mr. Fullinwider has numerous awards, including: DISD Teacher of the Year 1997-98, Excellence in Teaching Award in 1996, Volunteer of the Year Award in 1999, Equal Justice Award in 2003, and more.

He has numerous published op-ed pieces, articles, and poems, as well as extensive press coverage of his community work and teaching.

Mr. Fullinwider has been a member of the EDCS Board of Directors since 1978.

Amrit Kirpalani

Amrit Kirpalani is a member of the East Dallas Community Schools (EDCS) Board of Directors and is the CEO and Co-Founder of DenuoSource and Nectar Online Media.

Prior to joining DenuoSource, Mr. Kirpalani worked as a Management Consultant with McKinsey & Company where he served the consumer goods and telecom industries, primarily in the areas of Sales & Marketing, operations, and mergers & acquisitions. Prior to McKinsey, he worked as a manager with Accenture’s consumer & industrial practice serving retail chains in marketing and operations.

Mr. Kirpalani has been a member of the EDCS Board of Directors since 2012.

Mary Caroline Parker, Vice President

Mary Caroline Parker is the vice president of the East Dallas Community Schools (EDCS) Board of Directors and is currently the Head of School at Barbara Gordon Montessori Association.  She is also a board member of American Montessori Internationale of the United States Foundation (AMI/USF), Montessori Institute of North Texas (MINT), Montessori Institute of Texas (MIT), and AMITOT (AMI Teachers of Texas).

Ms. Parker is an internationally-recognized author and leader of the Montessori educational movement.

Ms. Parker holds a B.A. in Latin American Studies from Smith College, a M.Ed. in Montessori Integrative Learning from Endicott College, and a J.D. from American University in Washington, D.C.  She earned the AMI Primary diploma in 1975 from the Centro de Estudios de Educación in Mexico City under Cato Hanrath, where she served as the English/Spanish interpreter for the course.

Ms. Parker was the school director for East Dallas Community School (EDCS) from 2001-2009 and has been on the EDCS Board of Directors since 2011.

Trevor Palacio

Trevor Palacio is a member of the East Dallas Community Schools (EDCS) Board of Directors and an entrepreneur with strong ties in the communities served by EDCS.

Mr. Palacio has a rich history of coordinating youth serving projects, organizing community town hall meetings and mobilizing multi-cultural functions and activities.

In addition to serving on EDCS’ Board of Directors, Mr. Palacio serves as a Board Member of CitySquare (Formerly Known as Central Dallas Ministries).

He is fluently trilingual in Spanish, Garifuna and English

Mr. Palacio has been on the EDCS Board of Directors since 2011.

Eddie Reeves

Eddie Reeves is member of the East Dallas Community Schools (EDCS) Board of Directors and heads Reeves Strategy Group, a Dallas, TX-based consulting firm that helps clients significantly enhance their communications and organizational effectiveness.  He also is a member of Parkland Hospital’s Board of Managers.

He previously co-led the media relations practice of Public Strategies, Inc., serving as an advisor and senior strategist to major international firms.  He has also advised and coached heads of corporate giants, such as former AT&T CEO Ed Whitacre, former Merrill Lynch CEO Stan O’Neal and KPMG CEO Timothy Flynn.

Mr. Reeves served as press secretary and senior legislative assistant to U.S. Congressman J.J. ”Jake” Pickle, securing favorable coverage in prime media markets, such as NBC’s Dateline, ABC’s World News Tonight, and in the pages of Newsweek, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times.  In addition to his media duties, Reeves served as the congressman’s point person on healthcare, environmental affairs, labor and employment and financial services.

Mr. Reeves has been on the Board of Directors of EDCS since 2009.

Jeremy Smith, Secretary

Jeremy Smith is Secretary of the East Dallas Community Schools (EDCS) Board of Directors and is Executive Director of Rainwater Charitable Foundation.  He is also on the advisory council for Young Men’s Leadership Academy and on the board of directors for Texas Association for Infant Mental Health.

Mr. Smith earned a B.S. in Industrial Engineering, summa cum laude, from the University of Arkansas.  He then earned a Masters in Business Administration from Harvard Business School.

He is trilingual in Spanish, Madarin and English.

Mr. Smith has been on the EDCS Board of Directors since 2008.

Amy Stoneham, Junior League Representative (non-voting)

Amy Stoneham sits on the East Dallas Community Schools (EDCS) Board of Directors as the Junior League of Dallas’ representative.

The Junior League of Dallas (JLD) is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. The membership is a diverse group of more than 5,000 women who annually give more than 120,000 uncompensated hours of service to the projects and agencies supported by the JLD. Active members range in age from 22 to 49, and 74% are employed outside the home. They serve on numerous boards and coalitions throughout the community.
